"Inspirations" portrait series

illustration series by sydney illustrators babekuhl

Design studio BABEKÜHL is made up of the kind of creatives it's difficult to keep a lid on. From anime to Disney, Björk to Biggie, nothing is sacred. Possessing a crisp style with a striking degree of detail, the Sydney-based trio (Sam Painter, Billy Ryan & Patrick Santamaria) work across disciplines to deliver an aesthetic that speaks to both street culture and fine art. Over the past year, their works include a concept store, a burger, a limited edition t-shirt for Adidas and a self-published book.

The “Inspirations” graphic portraits series represents Babekühl’s most personal work to date - the artists have exercised their penchant for illustration and custom typography to pay homage to some of the musicians, actors, characters & artists that have influenced and informed their work over the years.

The series was privately shown during Babekühl’s take-over of Espionage’s appointment-only VIP store, The Atrium and is now available in limited numbers as 12” giclée archival prints from

bjork illustration kukl by babekuhl

Our Favourite icelandic weirdo. We love the way she constantly and fearlessly experiments with every aspect of her art. Björk probably embodies the spirit of techno colour more than any one else on the planet. In case you were wondering, KUKL (sorcery in icelandic) was the name of her first band.

Danny Trejo

During an 11 year stint in San Quentin Jail, Trejo became the state prison boxing champ in both the lightweight and welterweight divisions. Trejo went on to become somewhat of a muse to Robert Rodriguez, and His cameo as a silent assassin in Desperado might be our favourite characters in the history of film.

Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali on "What's My Line?": Are you a performer? "YES"… Would you be considered a leading man? "YES" … would you be considered a writer "YES." Do you ever do any drawing like comic strips? "YES." is there something quite unusual about our guest? "YES."

Dondi White.

Donald White AKA "DONDI" was one of the pioneers of the influential 1970s New York graffiti scene. His piece "Children of the Grave" which appeared in the graffiti bible, "Subway Art" in 1984, is a perennial favourite in the Babekühl studio.

eazy e illustration 'eazy duz it' by babekuhl sydney

Eazy E

Eazy E is probably the most ridiculous member of N.W.A. His whole vibe is just completely over the top, and that's why we love him. Although some of his gender politics might be questionable, you can never fault his dedication as an O.G.

Ennio Morricone

Not exactly a well known face, Morricone is an Italian composer and conductor who specialises in film scores. His work with director Sergio Leone is the stuff of legend. The piece "L'Estasi Dell'Oro" from the spaghetti western classic "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" is straight up genius, and a Babekühl iPod staple.

Jean Luc Godard

Godard… a real innovator and a big inspiration to us. Not only are his films some of the most stylish art you can lay eyes on, but the dialogue is endlessly quotable : "Two things are important in life: for men, women; for women, money."

Nate Dogg.

We have a playlist on the studio iPod which has only Nate Dogg songs on it. It goes forever, we just can't get enough of that voice. If you are even vaguely into rap, chances are, Nate Dogg has sung on one of your favourite tracks.
